Challenges in Small Engine Maintenance: L-4 Cub Restoration

 

At our home airport, the restoration community is more than just a group of enthusiasts—it’s a family. One of the restorer’s “airport sons” has been diligently working on his airplane, a homebuilt military L-4 Cub inherited from his grandfather. With guidance from the restorer, he tackled a variety of engine issues, hoping to get the aircraft back in the air.

 

The Continental 85-horsepower engine had received new cylinders, an overhauled accessory case, and new oil pump gears and cover. Even the carburetor and magnetos had been overhauled.

 

By the time we started work on Sis, our 1947 Bonanza’s moving tail, most of the Cub’s repairs were complete.

 

As warmer weather arrived, it was time for ground runs to confirm the engine was ready for flight break-in, per the manufacturer’s specifications.

 

The First Flight

 

On the big day, the restorer planned to take the L-4 up for a test flight. The plan was simple: orbit above the traffic pattern at the airport for about an hour before landing. Since the airport son was at work, I became the intermediary, relaying updates via video and text.

 

The Cub looked great in the air, and I sent a video of it flying to the airport son. But as I settled into the sunshine, I saw the restorer coming in for a landing far too soon.

 

At the edge of the taxiway, the restorer was met by another airport son. Curious, I joined them as they shut down the engine, eager to hear what had brought the flight to an early end.

 

A Troublesome Engine

 

The restorer explained that the oil pressure was dropping, and the oil temperature was climbing—classic warning signs.

Concerned, the restorer and his airport son decided to put the airplane away and think through the possible causes.

Later, the restorer and one of our Aeronca friends, who is also an A&P, discussed the situation. Given the recent top-end work, their suspicion turned to the engine’s bottom end, where the rod and main bearings reside.

 

The Challenges of Small Engine Maintenance

 

When it comes to larger engines, like the Continental E225 in our Bonanza, overhauls are straightforward: the engine goes to a certified shop for repair or overhaul as needed.

 

But small Continental engines, like the one in the Cub, present unique challenges. Parts are older, and engine shops often hesitate to warranty their work, even if the components are inspected and found serviceable.

 

For the airport son, the stakes are personal. His L-4 was built by his grandfather, and he’s determined to keep it flying within the family.

 

So, the restorer and our Aeronca friend, who also has a Continental 85 that needs work, have decided to collaborate. They’ll rebuild the engines together, keeping a careful eye on each other’s progress.

 

A Winter Project

 

With a plan in place, the restorer and his airport son will disassemble the engine and send parts out for inspection and repair.

 It’s shaping up to be a winter project, the kind that brings our airport family closer together.
