Advantages of Electronic Manuals and Regulatory Guidance in Aviation

Every day, we use our tablets and phones as tools to streamline our tasks. An excellent example of this is the ability to pull up manuals and regulatory guidance at our fingertips. The luxury of having multiple documents available electronically, anytime and anywhere, was merely a dream when we started in the industry. Thanks to technological advances, referring to manuals, catalogs, and regulations has become more accessible than ever.

Over a decade ago, the introduction of ForeFlight and other electronic charts revolutionized how we keep current versions of charts, approach plates, and regulations. It’s not just about reducing weight; it’s also about enhancing accuracy compared to paper versions.

During my tenure at the Air Ambulance, we transitioned from paper to digital onboard the aircraft. The flight department ensured the presence of approved digital navigation sources on the iPads, along with electronic copies of any training material provided for the aircraft and company manuals.

This level of transparency and accessibility has carried over into this new chapter of life.

Although it might not initially be as easy to highlight and learn as the paper copies they replace, having the electronic version nearby is undeniably handy.

When later studying for my dispatcher license, I used electronic flashcards on my phone and tablet in addition to paper and electronic copies of training materials. This method worked in harmony with my highlighted, tabbed, and frequently referred to paper copy of the FAR/AIM during study sessions.

While the restorer has copies of maintenance manuals for our aircraft on our electronic devices, he has also been called on to shed light for others with references within the FAA guidance indicated within the 43.13, the primary Advisory Circular for acceptable maintenance methods and practices when a hard copy of the publication is not readily accessible.

Within our subscriptions and some memberships, we have found electronic copies of the documentation available for reference or download without additional cost.

Some manufacturers have provided free electronic copies of their maintenance documentation online for reference and sometimes download while others have required payment.

The restorer has also found manuals for purchase either as a paper manual or a download from several areas online when necessary.

Life happens, both in convenient and inconvenient times and places. The ability to refer to troubleshooting information remotely might not always be necessary, but it could help defuse a sticky situation before it becomes a statistic. Embracing the digital age enhances efficiency and contributes to safety and information accessibility.
