“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” Bill Gates
This past week, like so many, has been another whir of activity.
The restorer was able to fly up to the restoration shop a couple of times in the Cub which is always a good thing when weather and schedules allow for an altitude fix in the midst of the day.
Aviating with friends doesn’t always happen, happily the decision to fly up allowed for slipping away for flights with both the other restorer and Rosie.
While nowhere near what we thought we would have flown by this time in the year, both if us have put time on Sis and the Cub.
Hours are flown off of new engines the same way experience is earned; by making the time and effort to do so.
By being intentional with time and focus.
This time last year, besides being knee deep in Sis’s cylinders with the restorer, I wanted to be comfortable writing wherever and wherever.
Projects at both the restoration shop and the airport have been more involved than we thought they would be but there is still progress.
The restorer has finished work and on his airport son’s Cub, a project they had started before the Bonanza and I entered the picture. I am grateful for their support and understanding as we changed the timeline of his project to get Sis back into the air.
In the time and focus spent working on these projects, I’ve found my comfort in writing in different places has significantly improved.
Writing will always be a process but I’m more able to write comfortable using my tablet or phone when out and about than before.
The tablet has become my constant companion at the hangar with Sis.
Her presence links with memories of flights asleep in her back seat as a kid with my parents navigating us safely on an another journey.
Early morning or late day flights will be most comfortable for the next couple weeks as summer weather has arrived.
The heat and humidity has allowed for density altitude over 3000 feet again today.
Neither man nor machine works as effectively in warmer conditions, we are both working on projects inside during the heat of the day and hope to get more work done at the airport when it cools down.
Am happy for the time I have been able to slow down, think, and just be. It has allowed for connection that may not be there otherwise.
While this moment is nothing like what I expected, being able to focus on writing and smaller airplanes is what I have worked toward for years.
Small, everyday, steps with intention have not always felt like progress is being made, but sometimes we are given the moment to look back and appreciate where we have been.
As it is in any area of life, we are making progress in our journey, though it’s rarely what we expect to find.
